Merry Christmas Collection

Hello! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas with family and friends! It may be the 26th, but the celebration of Christmas need not stop now; after all, it is only the 2nd day of Christmas.  In the church, the Christmas season continues through the Feast of Epiphany on January 6.  That said, here are some classic Christmas poems and verses that you can meditate on as you celebrate the birth of our Savior.

What Can I Give Him?
by Christina Rosetti

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd,
I would bring a lamb.

If I were a wise man,
I would do my part,
Yet what can I give Him?
Give my heart.

from O Holy Night
by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure

Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born.

Christmas Everywhere
by Phillips Brooks

Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight!
Christmas in lands of the fir tree and pine,
Christmas in lands of the palm tree and vine,
Christmas where snow peaks stand solemn and white,
Christmas where cornfields lie sunny and bright!

For the Christ Child who comes is the Master of all;
No palace too great and no cottage too small.

from God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman
Author Unknown

God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy.

Our Brother is Born
by Harry and Eleanor Farjeon

Now every child that dwells on earth,
Stand up, stand up and sing;
The passing night has given birth
Unto the children's king.
Sing sweet as the flute,
Sing clear as the horn,
Sing joy fro the children,
Come Christmas morn:
Little Christ Jesus
Our brother is born.

A Christmas Carol
by G.K. Chesterton

The Christ-child lay on Mary's lap,
His was like a light.
(O weary, wear were the world,
But here is all aright.)

The Christ-child lay on Mary's breast,
His hair was like a star,
(O stern and cunning are the kings,
But here the true hearts are.)

The Christ-child lay on Mary's heart,
His hair was like a fire.
(O weary, weary is the world,
But here the world's desire.)

The Christ child stood at Mary's knee,
His hair was like a crown,
And all the flowers looked up at Him,
And all the stars looked down.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing
by Charles Wesley

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"...

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

from Carol 3
by Sor Juana Ines de la Crus

Today you see in a stable
the Word speechless,
Greatness in smallness,
Immensity in blankets.
Such wonders! ...

He who had no beginning,
his being of Time begins;
the Creator, as a creature,
is now subject to our griefs,
Such wonders!

from The Blessed Virgin Compares to the Air We Breathe
by Gerard Manley Hopkins

This air...
Minds me in many ways
Of her who not only
Gave God's infinity
Dwindled to infancy
Welcome in womb and breast,
Birth, milk, and all the rest...

Made Flesh
by Luci Shaw

After
The white-hot beam of annunciation
fused heaven with dark earth,
his searing, sharply focused light
went out for a while,
eclipsed in amniotic gloom:
his cool immensity of splendor,
his universal grace,
small-folded in a warm, dim
female space-
the Word stern-sentenced to be
nine months' dumb-
infinity walled in a womb,
until the next enormity-
the Mighty One, after submission
to a woman's pains,
helpless on a barn's bare floor,
first-tasting bitter earth.

This Weekend: 4 Ways to Celebrate Advent

Now that you've finished your classes for the fall and are finding yourself immersed in finals and semi-formals, take some time this weekend to be with Jesus.  As we prepare our hearts for Him to come at Christmas, there are many ways you can commune with Him this weekend:

1. Prayer.  Have you visited the Greek IV Prayers and Ponderings blog? We are currently using the Ancient Christian Devotional to guide us through Advent scripture readings and prayers.  Give thirty minutes to God today.  Read through His Word, reflect on what He is saying to you, and pray to the God who loves you and has saved you.

2. Fellowship. We encounter Christ when we fellowship (read: hang out) with other believers.  On Sunday, go to church and celebrate the third Sunday of Advent. Afterwards, join us at the Greek IV Christmas Brunch. All are welcome. Bring a friend, bring some food. If you haven't found a church you call home here at Penn, ask me or one of your friends for some suggestions.

3. Serve.  Jesus said, "34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’  37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" (Matthew 25:34-40)  You can serve Jesus with your time, talents and treasures. The next time you see a Salvation Army bell ringer or are asked to tithe a bit extra at church, remember that the Christ who did not spare anything for you calls you to serve Him and others in this way.  {For those of us who are strapped for cash, certainly there are ways we can serve over Christmas break. Contact your favorite local charity as soon as you get home!}

4. Worship. Turn up the Christmas carols. Trim the tree.  Light a candle. Bake some cookies. Give them out to others with the lyrics to your favorite Christmas hymn or poem or Scripture attached.  Honor Him and others with your mind, body, soul and strength as you study and celebrate over the next few days.

See you all Sunday at 12:30!

Powerful Story of Transformation

Allow this true story to challenge and encourage you!
{Also, if you have a story  of God's work in your life or at Penn,  visit  Greek IV Stories to share your story.}
John MacKorell, campus staff at NC State,  recently passed along this story:
I met Kevin [name is changed], a senior in one of largest fraternities on campus, at a football tailgate last year.  From head to toe, wearing a visor, expensive sunglasses with the strap to hang them around your neck, a button down shirt, khakis, some nice shoes, and a couple of beers in hand, Kevin looked like your typical fraternity guy.  After speaking with him for a while, I invited him out to lunch the following week where we sat down to talk about the purpose and vision for Greek IV.  Upon finishing our meal and conversation, Kevin emphatically said, “Where do I sign up?! This sounds great!”  Without much delay, Kevin and I began to meet regularly to look at Scripture and talk about what it would look like to follow Jesus in the midst of Greek Life.
Now while looking at Scripture on a regular basis may have been a new thing to Kevin, Christianity was not. You see Kevin already claimed to be a Christian. He grew up going to church, his granddad was a Methodist preacher, and he had accepted Jesus at a young age.  On paper, Kevin looked like a solid Christian, but in reality he was living in a very unchristian way succumbing to all the temptations of the college Greek system.  In many ways, Kevin represents your typical, Southern Greek student: Christian in name, but partying all the same.
However, this semester all of that began to change. One night after a small outreach event, I offered to give Kevin a ride back to his car. During our short trip around the block, he began to open up about his struggles with faith in fraternity life. In a somewhat despondent tone, he said,  “You know, I say I’m a Christian, but I’m not a good example. I still get drunk on a nightly basis. Give me a pill and I’ll take it. Crush it up and I’ll snort it.” He even confessed that he had come out to some Greek IV gatherings the previous semester extremely high. Yet right before he finished he said, “I’m done though. I’m tired of being burnt out, and I’m ready to give it up to God.”
I responded by asking him if there was ever a time he had prayed for forgiveness and assurance of grace to which he desperately responded, “I’ve probably prayed that prayer a hundred times.” I continued by explaining that forgiveness is only the starting point, but that a true follower of Jesus is marked by trusting and devoting yourself to Him above all else. “Has there ever been a time where you’ve prayed for Jesus to take all of your life NOT just the part you’re shameful of?” I asked. “No,” he responded with anticipation in his voice. “Do you want to do it right now?” I asked, and with little hesitation Kevin looked over at me and said, “Yeah, let’s do that.” While sitting in my car beside a parking deck on campus, Kevin prayed for Jesus to take not just part of his life but all of it!
Kevin may dress the same, go to the same parties, and hang out with his same fraternity brothers, but the difference is unavoidable. Everyone wants to know the reason behind the change, and Kevin is letting them know. From typical fraternity guy who claims to know Jesus to radical fraternity guy who lives like Him, Kevin is living proof of Greek InterVarsity’s vision to see Lives Transformed.

A Festive Core Group Indeed: Tonight

Frat Guy Takes on Washington

This is an age-old story:  18 year-old with leadership potential turns frat guy.  22 year-old frat guy turns lawyer.  45 year-old frat guy-lawyer turns congressmen.  It happens time and time again...and that is exactly why we think it's important to reach Penn's Greek students with the Truth.  How many of your brothers and sisters will go on to become government officials and CEO's who make huge decisions regarding the future of our country? And what if they were able to make these decisions with wisdom bestowed from God out of a relationship with Him? Take a look at the list below: Do you see your home state represented? What about your Greek chapter? I see that Charlie Dent, a Republican Congressman from PA, was a Phi Psi.

Check out the list. Pray for your elected official. Pray for your brothers and sisters.

First Friday --> Second Friday

Since The Great Divorce is showing at Penn on the Second Friday of this month, I am going to make the executive decision to switch our First Friday prayer gathering and outing to the Second Friday of the month instead.  We will gather to pray at 6:00, catch the show and then grab a late dinner/dessert to so we can discuss the play.  Make note of this change in your calendars: First Friday is now Second Friday for the month of November: Friday, November 12th. 6:00 pm Prayer, 7:30 The Great Divorce, 9:00 Late Dinner/Dessert.

The show is extremely well-done and is very thought provoking.  Friends who are English or Philosophy majors will be very interested in this.  If you are interested, you can read the book before you see the show!

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Never Go To Small Group

Top 10 Reasons Why Should Never Attend a Greek IV Small Group

10. You don't like Laura Johnson's desserts and can't stand being in the same room as them.

9. You are a social recluse and don't want to meet people from other other Greek chapters.

8. You don't think Elliott is at all funny.

7. You hate spending time with people from your own Greek chapter- they are so boring!

6. You are a Very Important Person and you have better people to spend time with than, you know, God.

5. You already know everything there is to know about God and the Bible.

4. Your life is perfect, you have no struggles and you don't need anyone to pray for you.

3. You don't like talking to other people about things that are deep and lasting.

2. You think this world is fine the way it is; it doesn't seem at all broken or messed up, so there is no need to talk about how we can help make it better.

1. 3932 Spruce and Phi Psi are way too far to walk. Why couldn't they pick a more central location to have these small groups?
